The New York Times  published an article that Yoga May Be Good for the Brain.  There are so many benefits of chair yoga for older adults.

I recently asked those that come to my weekly classes I teach in retirement communities what benefits they receive from attending chair yoga.  Here’s what they have to say about Full Circle Yoga KC Chair Yoga Class:

  • I’ve noticed a big difference in my balance.  I enjoy the community and seeing the same people every week.  I feel better when I leave.
  • I know this sounds silly but I didn’t used to be able to push my recliner down with my legs but since coming to chair yoga every week I have the strength to close it using my legs.
  • I recently had a fall and I feel so much better after coming to chair yoga.
  • I can reach my washer and dryer in my apartment because of the stretching!  It’s also a peaceful way to start my day.
  • This chair yoga class has helped my sciatica so much!
  • My balance is better.
  • I’m more conscious of my posture because the chair yoga class puts so much emphasis on it.
  • My arms are stronger.  I sit up straighter and even when I’m walking.
  • I just learned that I’m shrinking! I used to be 5’4″ and now I’m 5’2″.  Chair Yoga makes me sit up straighter and every time I’m in a chair I think of you and sit up tall, it’s helping with my posture.

3 Chair Yoga Poses

Yoga is for everyone! Those that may not be able to stand for long or feel more confident and balanced in a chair can do many of the same poses in a chair rather than on a mat. Here are three chair yoga poses that can be done in a chair that offer the same benefit as if on a mat.

Chair Yoga Poses:

Chair Yoga Poses

Cat/cow- Improves posture and balance.  Opens the chest to allow for more oxygen to feed the body.  Strengthens and stretches the neck and spine.  A calming and stress release pose.

Warrior Chair Poses

Warrior I  – Strengthens shoulder, arm and back muscles. Tones abdominal and core muscles which can help reduce low back pain.

Pigeon - Chair Poses

Pigeon – This pose opens the hip joint, lengthens the hip flexor, stretches the gluteal, thigh, and piriformis muscles. This is a wonderful pose to reduce sciatic and low back pain.  Additionally, it’s a pose that releases stress that is often not noticed until holding pigeon.  This pose should be modified for someone with a hip replacement.

Benefits Of Chair Yoga For Seniors

Benefits Of Chair Yoga For Seniors

  • “I almost didn’t come because my back is bothering me, I’m glad I did, it helped.”
  • “I have sciatica problems and the yoga we did last week really seemed to help.”
  • “My neck was really bothering me, and now it’s not nearly as tight.”

These are just a few of the benefits of chair yoga I have personally heard from those older adults I have the joy of practicing with every week.  In addition to pain reduction, other benefits I see in those I share chair yoga with:

  • Confidence
  • Increased flexibility
  • Improved balance and strength
  • Creating community

Falls can result in hip fractures, head injuries, and other various injuries.  A high percentage of those who do fall with injury are not able to return to their prior level of independence and a decline in mental health occurs.  There is more research showing that chair yoga can be a preventative medicine and provides the benefits I see in working with older adults.
