5 Benefits of Yoga for Kids

May 16, 2025 by Full Circle Yoga KC Leave a Comment

At Full Circle Yoga KC, we believe yoga benefits all stages of life and we are committed to offering classes that support in the big transitions of life. In our current busy, on the go culture, yoga can be especially helpful for the growing child. Read on to learn the 5 benefits of yoga for kids in the elementary years.

5 Benefits of Yoga for the Growing Child

If you have ever practiced yoga, mindfulness, or a pause in the overwhelm of life, you know how grounding it can feel. You probably found it to be a reset and a way to clear the mental clutter. Kids also need an outlet to shake off the chaos of the day to come back into their body and mind so they too can feel the benefits of being grounded.

These are some of the benefits of yoga for elementary-aged children:

1. Helps focus and concentration

Studies show that yoga enhances cognitive functioning in children, especially executive functions like attention, memory, and self-control. Yoga teaches kids how to center their attention within their own growing body, which can improve performance in school. If you observe your child breath into their body and feel the rhythm of breath and movement within their body, you can watch the change almost immediately.

2. Reduces anxiety and stress

Unfortunately anxiety is becoming more common in elementary aged children. The growing child needs a safe and quiet space to practice tools that can reduce anxiety and stress. And when these tools are learned and practiced at a young age, they can apply them as they grow. Research shows that in our overstimulated society yoga can reduce anxiety.

3. Supports physical health and motor development

If you’ve ever taken yoga, you have probably experienced improved strength, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Those are all benefits to the growing child too! It promotes healthy body awareness and can help prevent injuries by teaching safe movement. Increasing flexibility can help reduce injuries. It’s amazing to me how many sports related injuries I’ve seen at my daughter’s school, and can’t help but wonder if yoga was offered on a regular basis if less injuries would occur which would be far less cheering from the sidelines.

4. Builds emotional intelligence and self-regulation

Through poses, stories, and breath, children learn to recognize and manage their emotions. Yoga gives them tools for handling frustration, anger, or sadness constructively. Research finds it also allows them to listen inward to bring emotional balance and feel emotions in their body to better release tension.

5. Encourages social connection and empathy

Yoga fosters a sense of belonging and community. There is something profoundly powerful to share movement, breath, and calm in a collective space. Often times yoga classes for kids offers activities that encourage cooperation rather than competition, and opportunities to seek understanding others to build empathy.

Benefits of Yoga for Kids and Teens

March 10, 2022 by Full Circle Yoga KC Leave a Comment

When yoga for kids and teens are designed to be playful it opens opportunity for them to experience their breath and body movement without judgement.  It meets them where they are in their bodies so they can embrace changes their bodies and minds go through in growing up.  Research shows that yoga and mindfulness have a positive impact on our children.

Through yoga, mindfulness, and connection, one learns tools for coping in times of stress and/or chaos. Yoga poses help improve concentration, focus, memory, coordination, and self awareness, strength, balance, flexibility, and mindfulness.  Our philosophy at Full Circle Yoga is to teach children yoga poses and tools that will help support them in every day living.  Yoga is taught in a variety of methods, including, games, basic and challenging poses, incorporating nature, partner poses, music, stories and so much more.

Our number one goal is to create a space for children to feel comfortable, supported and heard, so that they can feel confident, empowered, and respected.

Our kids yoga class, ages 3-6 is offered the first Tuesday of every month at 10:00am. A yoga class that is a highly engaging yet calming. Kids Yoga is designed to teach children yoga and mindfulness so that they can best manage the world around them. Through yoga poses children will improve their coordination, balance, and body awareness.  We encourage caregivers to join in the fun!

Our Big Kids/Family Yoga is offered every third Saturday of the month at 1:00pm.

Additionally we are partnering with Chelsea Medlock owner of Sevana Wren Studio who offers a Family Yoga and Hike every month starting in April.

We look forward to seeing you and your amazing children at Full Circle Yoga KC!

Kids Yoga and Family Yoga!!!

CURRENTLY ALL CLASSES ONLINE!!!!

We all know yoga is good for us! And when we take a class we are reminded of all the good benefits.  We feel relaxed, at ease, happy, and energized with a positive force.  Full Circle Yoga KC has a goal of creating opportunities for families to enjoy yoga together as a perfect family activity.  Kids Yoga and Family Yoga classes are ways a family can bond together.  Sure, there are times we need our own time and our own yoga class, but if we can create opportunities to do yoga with our family we can be that role model of showing the importance of wellness for the whole family.

Full Circle Yoga KC has recently started offering more family-centered yoga classes to support our growing community.

StoryBook Yoga is a fun interactive yoga class filled with yoga, storytelling, and games.  This class is designed for a caregiver and child 3-6.  A good way to plant the seed of yoga in our little people!

All Harry Potter Fans + Yoga Lovers!!!! Combine yoga and Harry Potter and you have a magical yoga class!!! Harry Potter Yoga can be for the whole family or maybe with your best friend or sibling!  Let your creative juices flow and feel like you’ve taken a calming draught from Madame Pomfrey!

Our newest class get’s “that was epic” from my youngest!!! Even my husband said, it was really nice to have time to just look into my son’s eyes and not have distractions for us to connect in a different way.  How cool!!!! Family Partner Yoga is designed for each pose to be completed with two individuals.  You and your child will have such great fun laughing and challenging yourselves, getting a workout and practicing mindfulness all in one class!
