Yoga and Pregnancy

Yoga, or prenatal yoga, and pregnancy are a prefect combination! Prenatal yoga is like the  rehearsal leading up to the grand performance of your birthing journey!  Mama’s who practice yoga while pregnancy have a strong tool in their well-house to pull from during labor.

While exercising can feel daunting it helps build stamina for labor and supports a healthy pregnancy.  Exercise normalizes blood pressure and glucose metabolism, builds muscle tone,  helps regulate digestion, increase energy, and improves mood.  Exercise also improves blood flow through the placenta by 30%.

Pregnancy has a profound impact on a Mama’s body as the body undergoes physical and emotional changes.  The first trimester is often the most challenging period of pregnancy with the greatest physical adaptation that takes place.  The blood pressure drops, intense fatigue, nausea, and lower back discomfort, mood swings, and constipation.   Regular yoga in the first trimester will help temper these side-effects.  Breath awareness that is practiced in prenatal yoga will help increase energy.

The second semester is often referred to has the “blooming period” where energy returns, skin glows, hair shines and the body finds a new normal with pregnancy.  Prenatal yoga offers poses that are safe and support the changing shape and weight of a pregnant Mama.

As baby grows and takes up more room, discomforts may set in again in the third trimester.  Yet, with poses and stretches offered in prenatal yoga your body will remain strong and prepared for your birthing journey.  The emphasis placed on breath in prenatal yoga is the platform for which a Mama can find her inner strength and confidence she can carry into her birthing journey.

Yoga and pregnancy compliment each other so nicely for the dual benefits yoga offers.  While exercise is important to Mama and baby, prenatal yoga offers a deeper level of preparing the mind and body for one of the most empowering challenges a Mama will experience.  Prenatal yoga prepares a Mama for discomforts that she will experience in labor.  Through holding challenging poses and relaxing into these poses it equips a Mama to relax and accept the work her body must do to bring her baby into the world.

Practicing Visualization in Prenatal Yoga

June 27, 2018 by Full Circle KC

Visualization is just one of many techniques we practice at in prenatal yoga classes Full Circle Yoga KC: Close your eyes and allow your facial muscles to relax, soften your brows, allow your jaw to relax releasing the tongue from the roof of you mouth.  Take two breaths here, letting the exhale be longer than the inhale.  Let yourself be present to this moment and find gratitude in all your beautiful body and baby are doing together in team.

As your eyes remain closed imagine yourself standing on a warm beach, first feel the warmth of the sand on your feet and between your toes.  With a stick in hand, or using your finger, imagine that you are writing the number one in the sand.  See the number one in your mind, watch your finger start at the top and draw a line to the bottom, making the number two visualize the curves and turns to complete the number two, moving to number three see the number being engraved into the sand, now to 4, see in your mind the number 5.  Continue in this manner until you get to the number 10 and start over again.  Take a restorative breath, feel yourself surrender into this journey.

Above is just one of many examples of visualization techniques for birth.  Other techniques include:

  • count the ripples as you imagine throwing a rock into a pond
  • visualizing the contractions as riding the waves- hear the rhythmic lapping of the waves,  the breaker in the wave is the most intense part of the contraction and as the wave crashes into the beach is a moment to relax before the next wave/contraction.
  • the mental imagery of your favorite flower- what is the flower, where do you see the flower, size, shape, how many pedals, smell.  Visualize the opening of the flower as your body opens to bring life into the world.

heading 2 Importance of Visualization

Practicing visualization in prenatal yoga allows it to become a practiced tool when entering labor, a journey into the unknown.   Visualization can be a wonderful tool to ride through the contractions and avoid spiraling from the pain of contractions.   When a Mama can place her attention on imagery it can often curb the intensity of the contraction in order to get to the next contraction.  Lots of visualization is placed on the end of the long hard journey of giving birth at Full Circle Yoga KC.

Visualization is not a practice that comes natural to many.  It’s easy to get off track or let the outside stimuli or thoughts interrupt visualization.  Practicing prior to the birthing journey allows it to be an organic self-help comfort measure.

At Full Circle Yoga KC our prenatal yoga offers a class that mamas at all stages can practice and build their physical and emotional strength in preparation for their birthing journey.

What’s a Birth Plan?

May 16, 2018 by Full Circle KC

What’s a Birth Plan? A birth plan is an important tool that allows a Mama to tell her birthing team what options are important to her during her labor and delivery.  It’s a 1-2 page document that lets her birthing team know a little about her and a general message to her birthing team.  The birth plan shares a Mama’s preferred choice for labor options, birth options, and after-birth options.  Ideally, it’s written in short bullet proof sentences.

Options to Consider:

Labor options– These options include relying on nondrug  and pain medication and epidural block.

  • Nondrug include visualization/meditation, massage, laboring in the bath/shower, cold/warm packs, aromatherapy, walking, changing positions frequently (we practice many of these poses during prenatal yoga), and rhythmic breath.
  • Procedures and interventions.  Consider if usual routines are okay or only if medically necessary.

Birth options– these options include positions, pushing techniques, and perineal care.

  • Positions offer the opportunity to move about and a variety of positions or to stay in one position
  • Pushing techniques include spontaneous, self-directed bearing down, directed pushing, modified directed pushing
  • Perineal includes measures to help relax and push effectively. Option of episiotomy or avoiding episiotomy

After-birth options- these options are around postpartum care.

  • There are many choices during this time that’s important to consider such as who will catch baby at birth, immediate or delayed cord cutting, who will cut the umbilical cord.  Other choices are immediate skin to skin with mother or removed to warmer for initial tests/procedures (eye care, vitamin K, newborn exam, weighing).
  • Breastfeeding vs formula-feeding
  • Circumcision
  • If you want baby to receive a pacifier or sugar water on pacifier

Plan B– this is just as crucial as the above.  The hope and plan is for a birth plan to go as expected, however sometimes medical complications  arise and being prepared and aware of how your birth plan may change in the event obstacles is important.

Personal choices- A birthing journey is a story that Mama will hold close to her heart for the rest of her life. Think about any other choices that may be important.

  • Ideas include: a relaxing and calming atmosphere, who will be on your birth team- doula, family, etc., cultural rituals, photography/videotaping,

Here’s an example of a birth plan:

We’re very excited to be having our first child and glad that you’re going to be caring for us during this time.  We understand that each birth process is unpredictable and that things unfold at their own pace and in their own way.  We have taken 10 weeks of childbirth classes with a focus on natural childbirth and have been preparing ourselves for a natural birth.  Below is a list of things that we hope will be part of our birth process.

  • Doula – Our doula will be working with us at home and will be accompanying us throughout the birth process as well.
  • Induction – We’re hoping that induction won’t be necessary. We’d like our son to decide when he’s ready to meet us.
  • During labor/delivery
    • No medications – We’re hoping to have a natural childbirth without the assistance of pain medication.
    • Intermittent fetal monitoring – I would like to be able to move around during labor as much as possible so we hope to utilize intermittent fetal monitoring.
    • Birthing ball – We will be bringing a birth ball with us in case the one you have is in use.
    • Use the tub – We think that being in the tub may be more comfortable during labor and would like that to be an option, if possible.
    • Episiotomy – If possible, we would like to avoid an episiotomy. However, we do understand that it’s necessary in some situations, especially if I’m tearing in the wrong direction.
    • Delivery position – Although we have no way of knowing for sure, we think I will be most comfortable delivering in a seated squat or hands-and-knees position.
    • We hope that the APGAR and very first assessments can be done with our son on my chest.
  • After delivery
    • Breastfeeding – We are looking forward to breastfeeding our son and prefer that he will not be given supplemental formula or water while at the hospital.
    • As little time away from us as possible once born
      • Initial physical in the room – we would prefer that our son’s initial physical and bath occur in our room.
      • If it’s not possible to do the initial physical in our room, we hope that he can be returned to our room as quickly as possible.
    • No circumcision – We are expecting a son and do not want him circumcised.

We look forward to working with you to bring our little Emmett James into the world!

You can create your own birth plan or look to the internet for guidance.  The Bump has an easy template to follow.

Dual Benefits of Mommy and Baby Yoga

March 6, 2018 by Full Circle KC

Mommy and baby yoga is not just yoga.   Dual benefits of mommy and baby yoga support both mother and baby in ways that support mental and physical health.  Mommy and baby yoga an ideal postpartum exercise because yoga meets you where you  allowing for a gentle recovery, and baby gets to remain close to what he/she knows best.  What happens at Full Circle Yoga KC during mommy and me yoga is fun, connection, communication, bonding, relaxation, and strengthening.

During our classes we begin with breathing exercises so we can be completely present to our bodies and full engagement with your baby.  As Mamas we excel at multitasking and always being ready for the next item on the agenda.  Closing the eyes, letting the chatter of the external environment go and becoming centered offers restoration.  Continuing with breath we warm our bodies up through gentle asanas all while baby is in Mama’s lap or close by on her mat.

Baby massage supports baby in so many ways.  In the book Baby Om, by Laura Staton and Sarah Perron states that studies show improved motor pathways with diligent repetition.  Massage offers ways to begin supporting muscle memory that will benefit baby’s coordination and will build self confidence.  By massaging we bring awareness to babies joints, work with reflexive movement, stimulate the back and neck, stimulate sensory neurons, and so much more!

Yoga for mama while baby is close on mat bring so many benefits.  As one Mama said at class the other day “this class is contagiously positive.”  During practice you will find yourself feeling more awake, alert with doing physical movement that will improve your circulation and respiratory system.  Through yoga poses we strengthen the pelvic floor and regain those abdominal muscles that disappeared during pregnancy! It’s an environment that reminds you to be gentle with yourself and take time to ease back into your pre-pregnancy body.  Being pregnant and giving birth is HARD work!

Bringing baby into our yoga practice is great fun for baby and Mama offering time to play.  It’s a community that supports the challenges of motherhood, offering guidance, pats on the back, normalization, and just plan Mamma chat.  It helps reduce the blues that arise postpartum through connecting with others that are on the same journey and moving your body to your breath.
