What to Expect From a Hatha Yoga Class

What to Expect From a Hatha Yoga Class

What to Expect From a Hatha Yoga Class

Full Circle Yoga KC was created through a vision to offer prenatal yoga that supported, challenged, encouraged, and helped Mamas consciously think about the birthing journey they wished to have.  Since opening the studio just over three years ago my vision has grown to support Mamas through prenatal and postnatal as well as families.  We live in a society that demands a lot of us- work, parenthood, friendships, family, exercise, and more.  I believe many of us are standing back and taking a look at how to better find balance and connection to those around us.

Part of creating a space that supports Mamas through pregnancy and beyond as well as families is creating a variety of classes.   Mamas often ask what class should they take when they are ready to get back to exercising.  I encourage starting with BYOB (Bring Your Own Baby) yoga class, so they can be with and meet their baby’s needs, while practicing yoga, and get the community support that Mamas need during the forth trimester.  While it is often Mamas that are on maternity leave, it’s not a class just for Mamas– Dads and grandparents are welcome to attend too!  The next class I suggest is a Hatha yoga class that can be modified to touch on specific needs as well as de-stress and reconnect to self.   When Mamas find time to breath, connect with her body through yoga, she ALWAYS walks away feeling stronger, centered, and feeling a sense of overall wellness.

Hatha yoga is a class that supports and benefits anyone that walks into a class.  It’s great for stretching, but it provides so much more! It’s a class that can support and improve balance, strength, endurance, and calm the mind when the body is struggling.  It’s a class that offers a beautiful balance of challenge and calmness to restore the body mentally and physically.  It is said that practicing yoga even once a week you can reap the benefits.  I have found that with many Mamas who began yoga because they heard prenatal yoga was good for them and baby continued after having a baby because they found the benefits to be much more than they had anticipated.

Building immunity is one of the many benefits of Hatha yoga.  Through contracting and stretching muscles, moving organs around, and moving in and out of poses you support the lymphatic system fight infection.  Since opening the studio and increasing my yoga practice I have seen a HUGE improvement in my health.  It’s  rare I’m sick.

We could all take time out to relax the mind and release tension in our body.  It’s probably one of the main reasons folks keep coming back to a Hatha yoga class.  They feel the immediate benefit when walking away after practice.

When you find a yoga instructor and space that speaks to you, you know it and you feel it, like buying a house, when you walk in, you just know it’s the right house. When I met Sarah Hockla, I knew immediately  I wanted her positive energy and ability to meet each person where they are to be a part of the Full Circle Yoga KC family.  She shared that she wanted to make it a class that wasn’t intimidating for any level, a class that wasn’t filled with lots of Sanskrit which can be intimidating for those that may be new to the practice of yoga.  Those that have taken her class have said “it’s a completely non-intimidating, really wonderful class.  I’m a chunky non athletic, non-yoga kinda gal and she’s made me fall in love with the yoga practice.”  I love this beautiful compliments for all the reasons this woman shared.  Yoga can be for everyone, you just have to find the right instructor and sacred space to appreciate and fall in love with the practice.

Is Power Vinyasa Yoga A Good Workout?

March 14, 2019 by Full Circle KC

Is Power Vinyasa Yoga A Good Workout?

The quick answer is YES!!! Let’s flow into the many additional benefits!

Vinyasa yoga is a form of yoga that is rooted in hatha yoga.  The challenge comes as powerful and regimented postures flow with breath.  Vinyasa yoga is a full body experience that can help you tone up, sweat,  build endurance and strength, and detox your entire system.

Power Vinyasa improves your strength by building lean muscle mass.  One of the great advantages of power vinyasa over a gym workout is it gives attention to full body and all the muscle groups.  Poses in a power vinyasa class include backbends, arm balances, inversions, and standing poses.  It doesn’t take long to start feeling and seeing the results!

Who doesn’t need to improve their flexibility! The continuous movements and stretching while breathing is double the impact on the muscles.   While moving full body movements and poses the muscles are able to release tension in muscles, joints and ligaments, and range of motion improves.  Oxygen to the muscles is like grease to a bike chain.  Increasing flexibility prevents injuries.

Power vinyasa helps reduce stress by shifting your focus from external to internal.  It’s a practice the focuses on mind, body, and spirit.  While the body is moving in rhythm with breath, the mind is offered cleansing through deep full body breaths.  When the head is lowered below the heart it slows the central nervous system.  Think sweat as a way to cleans the body of toxins and release the body of built up stress.  When we release stress we improve our sleep, reduce risk for cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure.

Power Vinyasa is a fast paced class that will build heat and offer a full body cardiovascular workout, and a deep clearing of the mind.  It’s a practice that feeds the mind, body, and spirit and will leave it wanting more.

Prenatal Yoga For Third Trimester

March 5, 2019 by Full Circle KC

Prenatal Yoga For Third Trimester

“Birth is not only about making babies.  Birth is about making mothers – strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength.” – Barbara Katz Rothman

Your coming into the home stretch of your pregnancy journey.   It may be the time when it all gets real for you and your partner, you’re bringing life into the world, you’re going to be a parent.  You’re about to experience that rite of passage that makes you a Mama, BIRTH!

Your body and baby are working hard in unison, making the final preparations before birth-day.  It’s often a time where it become more difficult to tie shoes, get up, roll over, walk, breath.  Yet, it’s a crucial time to keep your body fit, comfortable, and relaxed.  Prenatal yoga in the third trimester is a time to focus on preparing the body mentally and physically for labor and delivery.  In addition to your body making final preparations, yoga can help get baby in optimal fetal position for arrival.

Stabilizing Pelvis- This can be done by simply sitting higher on sits bones on front of pelvis.  Folding a blanket and sitting on the edge in easy pose will tilt the pelvis forward so baby’s head can engage.  In easy-pose join the energy of you and your baby with cleansing deep breaths.  This is a beautiful pose to recognize that every moment lasts only a moment and cultivate peace and calmness.  Beginning your practice in this pose allows you to listen to your body, your intuition, and your baby.   Deep breaths are what will ride you through the contractions, they will be your best friend.  Take this time to connect deeply with your breath.

All 4’s- So much goodness in all-4 poses! This helps baby move into an anterior position and release pressure off the lower back.  Think of this pose as cozy hammock for your baby as you sway, circle, feel a sense of lightness moving in time with your breath.  All 4’s bring more flexibility and opens the pelvis.  Cat/cow poses help get baby into optimal birthing position.

Hip Openers- Visualize strong open hips!!! Hip opener poses help bring balance and stability to the muscles and joints.  Poses such as wide-angle forward fold, warrior II, child’s pose, seated squats, standing wide hip circles give full range motion in the hip joint.

Squats- For Mamas with a baby that is breech, this pose is not recommended for you.  Squats are a pose that practices being okay with the discomfort and staying focused on keeping the body relaxed along with cleansing breaths.  This pose will prepare Mama for the shaking and burning, the strength and confidence she will bring to her birth.  Squats opens the pelvis and frees birthing muscles.

Savasana- While keeping the body active, it’s also just as important to create time for relaxation and tap into the inner power and wisdom.  It’s an opportunity to hold space for quiet, self-care, and deep connection with baby.  Savasana allows Mama to go inward as she will need to in labor and delivery, to trust and listen to her beautiful body.

What is Gentle Yoga?

February 12, 2019 by Full Circle KC

“Be good to yourself. If you don’t take care of your body, where will you live?”

– Kombi Yamada

One of the things I love most about gentle yoga is that it welcomes everyone, it’s not limited by age or ability. I think it takes us back to the basics of true yoga, where one can be in union with mind and body.  This is such a wonderful class for all types of people, especially when you have a wonderful teacher that wants to help you build your practice from the ground up and appreciates where you are on your life journey.  Gentle yoga offers poses  for one to move the body in a way that feels good and recharges the body both physically and mentally.

Gentle yoga reminds us that our body is a gift.  In a gentle yoga class you become mindful of how your body moves.  Breath and movements are pathways to overall wellness feeding the body and the soul.  Gentle yoga creates a space where we slow the business life and surrender to the calming movements and restorative breaths.

Poses in gentle yoga are held just long enough to feel the body, to strengthen and stretch, yet repair where your body needs support and love.  It’s a class that allows you to slow the pace and let go of the hustle and bustle of the day in and day out of life.

Gentle yoga is practically beneficial to those who are just starting to explore yoga.  For those that are stiff and wanting to improve their fitness level, gentle yoga offers the slower practice that makes it easier to get into poses.  Gentle yoga is also a wonderful practice for postpartum when Mamas are wanting to rediscover their body again after having a child or children. Those that are recovering from injury and need to explore postures more slowly, gentle yoga is wonderful option.
