Q&A Time | What is a Doula?

September 29, 2017 by Full Circle KC

What is a Doula? This is one of the most frequent questions I get asked.  Hiring a doula may be one of the best things you do for your birthing journey! If you were to ask my husband he would tell you YES, get a doula! We were a big supporter of our doula who supported us for our two childbirths.

A doula can be defined as a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the most healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

DONA international gives a great analogy that a doula is like your travel guide in a foreign country, helping support families through a life changing experience.

You’re interested in having a doula, what next?

Call and schedule a time to meet with 1-3 doulas and interview each of them.  You want to find a doula that both you and your partner feel comfortable with and someone that supports your birth plan.  This is a chance to get to know one another.

Some questions you may want to ask:

  1. How long of have you been a doula?
  2. Tell me about your experiences?
  3. Have they worked with your MD or midwife before? That’s always an added benefit!
  4. What’s their availability?
  5. What’s their back up plan if they can’t be at the birth?
  6. Cost of their services and what does that service include?

Check out these doula websites for the KC area.

Yoga News
Our next prenatal partners yoga is sure to be a great event! Thursday, October 26th at 5:45pm followed by a session with Lee Veal, a cranial-sacral specialist who will offer a session for partners.  A little information on Lee is below.  You can read more about his practice at www.leevealdc.com
Originally trained as a chiropractor with a focus in cranial sacral, he also explored a variety of movement therapies, in part, to heal his own injuries. His interest in working with parents and children of all ages grows out of his work as an educator and from decades of working with babies. His unique approach integrates cranial sacral with therapeutic pilates, contact improvisation, meditation, and internal arts. Lee draws from these various movement vocabularies, allowing people a greater freedom of movement in their daily lives. Learning simple movements from a whole systems approach allows people to encounter themselves as multidimensional, holographic portals to the entire cosmos.

Yoga For Kids: Reduce Stress

September 22, 2017 by Full Circle KC

Yoga for Kids….it’s just simple fun while getting all the benefits at the same time! When kids practice yoga it allows them to learn life long healthy habits of tapping into their body, mind, and especially breath.

Yoga For Kids

Yoga teaches kids how to find calmness, focus, balance and relax the body. Stress impacts us both emotionally and physically.  When children have the outlet of yoga it can reduce stress through movement and focusing our thoughts and breath.  It’s a coping mechanism that teaches mindfulness.  While yoga can reduce stress, it has many more benefits such as helping kids build body awareness, promote fitness in a non-physical or non-competitive environment.
